Greg Bowden joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) as chief philanthropy officer and vice president on Dec. 4, 2023. Bowden came to UMB from the John Hopkins University (JHU) Carey Business School, where he served as associate dean for development and alumni relations. 

A native of the Baltimore area, Bowden arrived at UMB with more than 25 years of experience in development and philanthropy. In his role at the JHU Carey Business School, he led the strategy and vision for all development and alumni relations activities, resulting in more than $60 million over seven years. 

Before that, he was senior director for the development at JHU's Berman Institute for Bio ethics, where he managed fundraising efforts and served as part of the management team for the "Johns Hopkins: Rising to the Challenge" campaign. In six years, Bowden helped to raise almost $30 million. 

Before joining JHU, Bowden served as director of development for the Greenwood (S.C.) Genetic Center and executive director of the South Carolina Birth Defects Foundation, which provided diagnostic services, clinical care, research, and graduate education around genetic disorders. Bowden also has held fundraising leadership positions with Corporate DevelopMint, Custom Development Solutions, and the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, S.C. 

Bowden graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership. He also has a graduate certificate in nonprofit management from JHU.
