World AIDS Day Month

The University of Maryland, Baltimore will begin World AIDS Day month programming on Monday, Nov. 18 and officially observe World AIDS Day on Monday, Dec. 2. The JACQUES Initiative of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Office of Interprofessional Student Learning & Service Initiatives (ISLSI) and the School of Pharmacy are collaborating to bring diverse interactive World AIDS events and activities to the entire campus community.

  • Facing AIDS Campaign
    Monday, Nov. 18 | 10 a.m. - noon and 2 - 3 p.m. | Pharmacy Hall Atrium
    In support of our nation’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy, there will be an interactive photo booth to carry out this awareness building activity. At the end of the week, images will be uploaded to the “Facing AIDS” website as a symbol of solidarity in our campus-wide response to the HIV epidemic. Click here to visit the Facing AIDS website.

  • HIV/AIDS Awareness Month Forum
    Monday, Nov. 18 | noon – 1:50 p.m. | SMC Campus Center, Elm Room B
    Join Alexandra Reitz from the JACQUES Initiative and Kate Bishop from STAR TRACK in an interactive forum to kick off the campus-wide HIV/AIDS Awareness Month. JACQUES Initiative's mission is to provide a holistic care delivery model that provides long-term treatment success for urban populations infected with HIV.  STAR TRACK has an interdisciplinary team that works to provide comprehensive care for HIV-infected and at-risk adolescents and young adults. Food will be served following the forum.

    Stop by during your lunch break for our chili cook-off fundraiser. All proceeds go to STAR TRACK, a University of Maryland Children’s Hospital Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine addressing the complicated needs of adolescents who are infected with HIV.  Purchase one bowl of chili for $5, and any additional bowls of chili for $3. Be green and bring your own soup mug or bowl to receive a $1 discount!

    The SMC Campus Center Fireplace Lounge will be the sight of the World AIDS Day Resource & Involvement fair.  This fair will include information on HIV and AIDS, linkage to service and ways to get involved. This will also be the site for the Facing AIDS photo campaign and registrations for the UMB Living Ribbon.
        
  • Living Ribbon 
    Monday, Dec. 2 | 12:30 p.m. | SON Lawn
    The red ribbon is the international symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness.  Join us as we make a UMB living red ribbon on the School of Nursing Lawn.  Red ponchos will be distributed the day of in the SMC CC, Fireplace Lounge starting at 12:00 p.m.  Please click here to register.

  • Revealing of the AIDS Quilt

    The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, often referred to as the AIDS Memorial Quilt, is an enormous quilt made as a memorial to and celebration of the lives of people who have died of AIDS-related causes.  UMB will be displaying three panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt from Monday, Dec. 2 - Sunday, Dec. 8.  Please click here to learn more about the NAMES Project Foundation.

    Trained volunteers and staff from JACQUES Initiative will provide FREE HIV testing.  Testing is open to all UM students, faculty, staff and community members.

    “Life Don’t Have To End.”
    is a compilation of stories, images, and wisdom from HIV positive men and women. Over a two-year period, more than 60 courageous individuals from the JACQUES Initiative dictated their personal life stories to Cricket Barrazotto for the purpose of compiling a book. These contributors wanted their voices and stories to be inspirational to others. The book speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit and body. Readers are exposed to tragedy and triumph as they share in the intimate journeys of the book’s contributors.

  • How to Survive a Plague Documentary Screening

    This 2012 American documentary focuses on the early years of the AIDS epidemic, and the efforts of ACT UP and TAG.  It chronicles an improbable group of young people, many of them HIV-positive young men, as they become radical warriors taking on Washington and the medical establishment.
