The University of Maryland will observe World AIDS Day week beginning on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012. The JACQUES Initiative of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Office of Interprofessional Student Learning & Service Initiatives (ISLSI) and interdisciplinary representation from all professional schools are collaborating to bring a full week of World AIDS Day week events full of interactive activities for the whole campus community.

HIV/AIDS Week Forum *
12 - 1 p.m. | Pharmacy Hall N103
Dr. Neha Sheth Pandit (School of Pharmacy) and Alexandra “Allie” Reitz (JACQUES Initiative of the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland -School of Medicine), will lead a discussion on the often-veiled political standpoint of HIV/AIDS in the community and existing treatment gaps for patient populations.  Lunch will be provided at the end of the forum.

Anna Fowlkes, will be providing an educational seminar concerning HIV/AIDS in the elderly population.

Dr. Heather Free, will be discussing working in a clinical setting with patients living with HIV/AIDS who also have mental disabilities. Deepsouth documentary screening

Chili Cook-off Fundraiser ^
11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. | Pharmacy Hall Atrium
Come join us during lunch for our first ever, chili cookoff. All proceeds go to STAR TRACK at University of Maryland Children’s Hospital Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine addressing the complicated needs of adolescents who are infected with HIV. Purchase 1 bowl of chili for $3, and any additional bowls of chili for $2. Be green and bring your own soup mug or bowl to receive a $1 discount! Soap and a sponge will be provided to use in the Pharmacy Hall kitchen.

Facing AIDS Campaign Photobooth ^^
10 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Pharmacy Hall Atrium 
The University of Maryland-Baltimore campus will participate in this national campaign to reduce stigma and share why and how they are “Facing AIDS.”  In support of our nation’s first National HIV/AIDS Strategy, there will be an interactive photo booth to carry out this awareness building activity. At the end of the week, images will be uploaded to the “Facing AIDS” website as a symbol of solidarity in our campus-wide response to the HIV epidemic. Click here to visit the Facing AIDS website.

Living Ribbon >

The red ribbon is the international symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness.  Join us as we attempt to make a UM living red ribbon on the School of Nursing Lawn.  Red ponchos will be distributed the day of in the SMC CC, Fireplace Lounge starting at 12:00 pm.  The picture will be taken at 1:30 pm.

Lunch & Learn session

UMB Students, Faculty and Staff are welcome to attend. The role of the current and emerging professional in the National HIV/AIDS Strategy will be discussed in an interdisciplinary and interactive format. Facilitators will provide local context about the current HIV epidemic here in Baltimore, Maryland. Come learn how our academic community can get engaged!

Resource & Involvement Fair
Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 | 12 - 2:00 p.m.
The SMC CC, Fireplace Lounge will be the sight of the World AIDS Day Resource & Involvement fair.  This fair will include information on HIV and AIDS, linkage to service and ways to get involved. This will also be the site for the Facing AIDS photo campaign and registrations for the UM Living Ribbon.
