UMB Focuses Outreach in the Community At the request of Dr. Ramsay, the office of external affairs has worked very hard this year to form the UMB Outreach Council. The Council is composed of about 35 dedicated students, faculty, and staff and representatives from three local community schools, and is coordinated by Barbara Klein and Brian Sturdivant. The three initial schools to participate in this partnership are: Vivien T. Thomas High School, Diggs-Johnson Middle School, and George Washington Elementary School (located west to east on the map to the right). The vision of the council is to provide enriched educational, health, and career experiences and opportunities for community children through a coordinated partnership of UMB with local community schools. This interdisciplinary collaboration is expected to synergize our current outreach efforts, strengthen the social impact of UMB in the local community, create many enduring positive relationships, and foster the growth of future Maryland leaders. This initiative provides UMB students with numerous and varied outreach opportunities. The commitments vary from a few hours on just one day to tutoring or mentorship relationships that can last for a lifetime. There are opportunities to fit all time schedules and interests. Examples of events are listed below: - Fundraising: Each school has a wish list of items that would positively impact their students. Interested students or student organizations can fundraise for the specific items of for the funds that are needed for purchasing the items. Examples include: Incentives for new attendance and positive behavior initiatives, such as gift certificates; snacks; adolescent toys; magazines; sponsored pizza/ice cream socials; sporting goods; jewel making kits; electronics (remote controlled cars, headphones, etc.); art/school/stationary supplies; stuffed animals, team hats and hair accessories. Funding for taking 50 students to movies as reward for perfect attendance; funding for purchase of gift certificates to local grocery stores for parents as reward for encouraging their child’s perfect attendance, etc. Contact Brian Sturdivant at bsturdivant@umaryland.edu or 6-1678.
