In addition to being comprised of seven professional schools, there are numerous programs and departments within each school and student leadership councils to represent each of these student sub-populations.
Professional students at UMB have repeatedly demonstrated a commitment to service and leadership during their term at UMB. Jon Soistman, Dental Class of 2011 President, expresses only respect for his classmates and describes his duty in office as the opportunity to “lead a class comprised of student leaders.”
While we can be proud that there is no shortage of representation and initiative at UMB, it can get pretty confusing when when trying to get started in Leadership, Community Service, or Cultural activities with so many organizations on campus.
Volunteerism is a common thread that unites virtually all of UMB students. Many student groups look for ways to promote bonding and participation by hosting community service events on their own, unaware that there is a school-wide organization entirely committed to coordinating Community Service called the UMB Outreach Council.
The UMB Outreach Council was formed with the help of President Ramsey by the Office of External Affairs. It is a university effort that focuses on Community Service in the Baltimore City area and is comprised of dedicated students, faculty, staff and community representatives from 3 local schools.
The Outreach Council strives to strengthen the social impact of UMB in the community by synergizing student/staff outreach efforts towards making a collective positive impact in our neighborhood and to support the educational growth of Maryland’s next generation of students in Baltimore City.
The Council keeps an updated list of immediate needs and ideas for student groups looking to get involved in Community Service. The list includes tutoring sessions, fundraising needs, and program initiatives that the community representatives who serve on the Council have expressed an immediate need for (visit the UMB Outreach Council page for more details).
Student groups wishing to host healthcare events can coordinate their efforts with the Coordinator for Community Affairs, Brian Sturvidant (bsturdivant@umaryland.edu) or visit the Office of External Affairs website at http://www.oea.umaryland.edu/gov/community/index.html.
UMB students will be looking for new ways to get involved in social, cultural, and volunteer projects this year. In addition to providing internet resources, the USGA sponsors an annual event called “FallFest” that provides students with exposure to all of the student organizations available on campus.
This year “FallFest” will be held on September 25th from 11am-2pm and will feature many free giveaways, music, and a complimentary hot lunch on behalf of the USGA so don't forget your student ID to get into this great annual event!
