UM Hispanic Association of Nursing Students
October 2004 / Teleconference with UMHANS - Shady Grove
First, I am planning on sending out an information email to the entire faculty telling them about the JHU cultural competency workshop we would like to hold this November. The workshop would talk about linguistics, working with interpreters, and the Latino population. There are a couple dates that are possible and I wanted to see what everyone’s opinion was on the date. We are looking at 11/5 (Friday) 5:30-7:30, 11/1(Thursday) anytime after 3:30, and 11/12 (Friday) anytime after 3:30. Right now, I am in favor of Thursday the 11th from 4pm to 6pm. Let me know what you think and if you know of any thing that might conflict with this date. We would like to open this to all students and faculty and maybe make it a regular event in the future. Each workshop would focus on a topic specific to working with the Latino population in healthcare.
We also need volunteers to help promote HANS at the school of nursing open house on 10/23 from 9am to 1pm. There will also be a student panel if you are interested in participating. If you can dedicate an hour or so, just let me know. It’ll be a good time to get students to come to the school and tell them about our organization.
Also, EBLO has an after school tutoring program at Highlandtown Elementary School. They are in need of tutors for elementary school age Hispanic students. The program runs five days a week from 2:25-5:25, so you could pick what days you would like to volunteer.
Lastly, we are planning another Happy Hour at Little Havana with Chi Eta Phi sorority on the 22nd of October from 3-6pm. Hopefully, those people who were not able to make the last one could come out. Please let me know if you are interested in any of these events or if you have any ideas you want to bring up. I have a pretty busy week coming up, so I think that’s all I can go over. The next meeting will be the 8th of November.
