Black History Month - February 2012

Black History Month is an observance of the history of the African diaspora in a number of countries outside of Africa. It began   as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926 in order to educate the American people about African-American history, focusing on African Americans' cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements. Since 1976, it is observed annually in the United States and Canada in February.

Spotlight Artist Reception: Alicia Ashley Weathersby

Alicia Ashley Weathersby began her career as a "primitive" artist making jewelry. Infusing this technique with crafting and fine arts she developed her own distinctive style of expression.  Her collage technique include a combination of mixed media: metal, wire, textured and handmade papers, paint, cloth and fibers that marry to create a rare three dimensional effect. Please join us as we celebrate Alicia Ashley Weathersby.

The Prep School Negro Documentary Screening

Join filmmaker, André Robert Lee, as he takes a journey back in time to revisit the events of his adolescence while also spending time with current day prep school students of color and their classmates to see how much has really changed inside the ivory tower. What he discovers along the way is the poignant and unapologetic truth about who really pays the consequences for yesterday's accelerated desegregation and today’s racial naiveté. Afro-Caribbean dance fitness is the celebration and fusion of modified West African and Brazilian dance movements and cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise. The class is designed to help elevate your heart rate (burn calories), build endurance and tone the muscles while dancing to the beat of Afro-Caribbean and world music. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to participate in this unique dance fitness experience. The dance movements are broken down and modified to ensure everyone experiences a safe but exhilarating dance fitness cardio workout.
