FAQs

How much time can I sign up for?

Our appointments are typically 50 minutes long; however, longer appointments are occasionally available.  Make your appointments early—up to two weeks ahead—to ensure availablity during busy times.”

What’s it like working with a writing consultant?

Writing consultants will work with you on your paper, résumé, cover letter or CV. Usually, the writing consultant or you may read your work aloud. This is to assess clarity, concision, tone, and audience. Consultants help you review and improve your writing by asking questions, noting discrepancies in thoughts, or offering an alternative presentation. In the end, it is your work and you make final decisions. Consultants also assist with matters of APA style, the style manual used by several schools here at the university.

What do I need to bring with me?

You should bring a copy of your work as a hard copy.  Relating your own particular writing challenges to the consultant is helpful. If you have concerns about your particular assignment, or its meaning is unclear, we encourage you to first speak to your instructor. However, we can help you to decide on a course of action, if you’re having trouble starting the paper.

In what ways can a writing consultant assist me?

The goal of speaking and writing is to communicate effectively-- to convey your meaning in a clear, succinct manner. Our writing consultants can assist you with organization, coherence, and clarity (higher order concerns) or lower order concerns such as grammar, punctuation and article usage. Our goal is to help you communicate more effectively, in both speech and writing.
