Summer 2013 - School supplies were collected for the Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts a community resource school with grades 9-12.
Spring 2013 - The Staff Senate collected items for the UM Children's Hospital. Third grade students from Grange Elementary also participated in this project by decorating gift bags with a spring theme. The Staff Senate used these bags to distribute a wide of variety of items to the patients in the Children's Hospital.
November/December 2012- The Staff Senate collected items for the veterans who are staying at the Baltimore VA Medical Center for the holidays.
November-December 2012: The Staff Senate joined with Cell Phones for Soldiers and initiated a campus-wide campaign to donate old cells phones that enable our troops to call home. The collected phones are brought to a recycling center; in turn, they pay “Cell Phones for Soldiers” money which is then used to purchase calling cards for our soldiers. (Annual Event)
November 2012 - The Staff Senate will be hosting a dinner at the Ronald McDonald House on Friday, November 9, 2012.
September-December 2012: Collecting the pink lids from containers of Yoplait Yogurt is another initiative taken on by the Staff Senate. This campaign supports Breast Cancer research with Yoplait donating $0.10 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for every pink yogurt lid they receive. The Staff Senate provided collection boxes at designated sites across campus and then mailed these off by the designated date. (annual event)
March 2012: The Staff Senate began participating in the RMH Pull-Tab Program which is to collect the pull tabs from soda, soup or food cans and deposit them in containers located around campus for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. These are taken to a local recycling center, where they are weighed and redeemed for cash per pound. This money goes into their main operating fund and is used to purchase fuel for the shuttle that transports the kids to the hospitals. (ongoing event)
January-February 2012: We collected much-needed items for the RMH food pantry. There were collection boxes located in various buildings around campus. Items were delivered to the RMH the week of March 5. July 2012: The Staff Senate hosted a dinner/cookout at the Ronald McDonald House on Thurday, July 12. The meal was for approximately 50 people, including those who will be volunteering to help prepare and serve dinner and included a main meal/entree, dessert and drinks for everyone. July-August 2012: The Staff Senate will be collecting new backpacks and school supplies for the James McHenry Elementary School during July-August, 2012. We will be working with Brian Sturdivant in External Affairs as well as SGA and their student representatives who have expressed interest in being involved with some of our community outreach efforts.
July-August 2011: Backbacks and school suupplies were collected for Family Connections and presented to Dr. Strieder in August of last year. Every child (approximately 100 children) affiliated with the Grandparent Family Connections Program was given a brand new backpack filled with new school supplies that were distributed at their back-to-school camp event.

August 2010: Between September-November, the Staff Senate supported a virtual food drive to benefit the Maryland Food Bank and the Hungry of Maryland. People could donate money or select food items on-line that they would then add to their “shopping cart” and pay for. This enabled the Food Bank to get exactly what was needed and allowed them to purchase more than four times as much with any monies donated. The Maryland Food Bank distributes food to more than 900 soup kitchens, food pantries and shelters in the state.
December 2009: The Staff Senate organized a Holiday Drive for Family Connections, a community-based UMB program that started in 1996 that serves families from Baltimore City to help meet their children’s basic needs and prevent neglect. The program falls under the auspices of the School of Social Work and is headed by Dr. Fred Strieder. This campus-wide drive brought in brand new blankets/throws, coats and snowsuits, scarves and hat sets, mittens, gloves and socks, pajama sets, infant sleepers, hand-knitted hats as well as some cash.
November 2009 – February 2010: On several occasions, the Staff Senate collected some of the “much-needed” items for the Ronald McDonald House which included paper towels, toilet paper, disinfectant spray, tissues and shower curtain liners.
December 2008: The Staff Senate collected requested items for the in-patient veterans of the Baltimore VA Hospital that were delivered just in time for the holidays. Donations were received from various schools and departments on campus, including UMMS and even from some off-campus sites. The collection included toiletry items, socks, gloves, slippers, lap robes, hand-knitted hats, throws, knit hats, baseball caps, including 3 bags of baseball caps donated by the Aberdeen IronBirds, novels/books, puzzle books, DVD’s, phone cards, playing cards/Uno cards, board games, Dominos and even personal cards and letters.
November 2008: The Staff Senate organized a fundraiser to benefit clients of Our Daily Bread, Maryland’s hot meal program, serving more than a quarter million meals to the hungry of Baltimore each year. Brand new winter hats, mittens, gloves, socks and scarves were collected from the various schools and facilities on campus. Approximately 400 items were received for distribution.
