Interest in Serving on the Senate: I have been a member of the Staff Senate for 3 years. I believe it is important that staff be recognized for the work they do, not just the day to day, but behind the scenes. Staff are very important to any organization and without the backing of the staff senate, their voices would not be heard.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: I am hoping to assist with the various activities that the staff senate sponsors as well as continue with my role with the Council of University System Staff (CUSS).

I'd encourage conversation around campus initiatives for compensation transparency, and equity, along with short term disability benefit options. I'd stimulate discussions around UMBs footprint in surrounding counties beyond the city line, and how we can expand our outreach to encompass that area as many of our staff commute into the city from the county to work each day.

Introduction: I work for the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health in the Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. I support the Division Director and 7 other faculty members.
Interest in serving on the Senate: I have been on campus since 2000 and I feel I have gained a lot of insight and experience. I feel that I know "who does what" and where to go for almost every question that comes up in my office, and I'm happy to share my knowledge. I have served on the Staff Senate for 3 terms, and I am finishing my first term on CUSS (Council for University System Staff) I feel shared governance is vital to making sure that our concerns as staff are heard and when possible, acted on.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: What I envision for the university administrative staff are clearer, more centralized answers (that aren't several pages long) to those questions without having to experience years of trial and error. Due to a suggestion from the Staff Senate, a centralized website to identify and reserve rooms for meetings was made available. Such a simple thing makes work life a little easier! I would love to see even more expertise sharing between staff members in the form of a moderated online forum to ask and answer questions. With all the evil of "social media" we hear about in the news, we could harness it for good!
Hobbies/Interests: I like cooking, going for walks, and hanging out with my kids.
Introduction: My name is Malinda Hughes, and I have been a UMB employee since 2011. For five years, I worked as an Academic Program Manager in the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), and recently was appointed as Chief of Staff for OAA and the Graduate School. I was honored to be named Employee of the Month in May 2016 and I was thrilled and a bit overwhelmed at having been honored as UMB’s 2016 Employee of the Year at the Service Recognition Luncheon in March. But I am most proud to be a UMB CURE Scholar mentor for two seventh graders at Green Street Academy in West Baltimore. (I encourage other staff members to get involved in this wonderful program!)
Interest in serving on the Senate: My desire to serve on the Staff Senate stems from two beliefs: a) work should be an enjoyable part of a well-rounded life, and b) shared governance is an important means to affect change, both inside and outside of UMB. Community outreach is integral to the Staff Senate’s mission, and I am excited about the possibility of contributing to the Senate’s mission and efforts.

Interest in Serving on the Senate: During my graduate stay at the University of Maryland Baltimore County I served as department Senator. While holding this position, I not only voiced the concerns of those of my department but other graduate students at the university as well. This position helped me recognize the concerns of not only myself and those close to me but those from afar. I have always been able to think from others perspectives, but held only few chances to do something about it. While given this chance I held no bias for that would cloud my vision and deter the solution at hand. I would like to use this gift and skill and apply it here at this institution as a fellow Staff Senate.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: I hope to not only address the problems of those at UMB but also provide helpful insight and solutions to all that they name. It's important that a leader not only addresses the problem, but also provide solutions for those that it affects. I hope to be the voice for those at UMB who feel that their voice are not being heard or who've been deemed as less important to those who hold higher privilege and career ranking than them. During my term as Senator at UMB I hope to go beyond those before me and bring upon innovative ways of thinking and equality on campus and its surrounding community. The goal of UMB should not only be to those of its students and faculty and staff but to also to those they walk amongst. Baltimore City is an underprivileged city but nevertheless deserves a chance to a better, and brighter future. We deserve to give them that.
Hobbies/Interests: My hobbies and interests varies by day. I enjoy taking on new adventures, and trying new things. I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, and indoor rock climbing. I also enjoy finding new DIY projects, and ways I can make a difference among my community. I also enjoy relaxing days where I can sit at home and read a book or to simply catch up on another great season of Game of Thrones.
Introduction: I am the office manager, and administrative assistant to Dr. Jacques Ravel, professor & associate director, at the Institute for Genome Sciences, School of Medicine. In addition to managing daily operations & scheduling appointments, I also manage the educational seminars for the Institute, so I interact with faculty & staff, not just within the US, but globally, as well! Interest in Serving on the Senate: I’ve been honored to serve a full term as a Staff Senate and the experience has been phenomenal. It’s been an opportunity to learn more about shared governance, but it has also been an opportunity to learn from my fellow Senators who are so diverse and knowledgeable about policies and procedures. There is so much more to learn and a lot more work to be done. It is my desire to make an impact on the quality of life for employees of the University of Maryland Baltimore.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: I would like to play an intricate part of improving the lives of employees. Interest in serving on the Senate: I would like to serve on the Staff Senate because I come from a small division where I get to experience the benefits of working for SOM while in a UMMC building. I appreciate the integration of the two university groups but at times there is also a division between communication and camaraderie. I would like to help bridge the gap between faculty and staff and create more of an inclusive environment between the UMMC and UMB staff. I have had great experiences with programs I participated in here at UMB and I would like to be able to share those experiences. I also would like to help represent our largely female staff to make sure our voices are heard while representing fellow staff in a leadership role.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: I hope to help develop more programs for training staff, more "meet and greet" type events to introduce staff to new programs, and encourage professional development programming. Interest in Serving on the Senate: I have been involved with the Staff Senate for a few years. Have learned a lot regarding what is going on in the university on a strategic level, and have had the honor to serve on the community outreach. In the process have been able to join another out reach program (I have had the honor to serve on) young Women In Bio, with Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience in a STEM program that Rena Lapidus and I have put together. This program reaches the community youth twice a year. I have also been able to put together a volunteer program. This enables the CURE group and yWIB to place community hours in for high school, and enrich their knowledge of sciences by volunteering in the Center of Innovative Bio Medical Resources. Due to my term on the Staff Senate I feel that there have been many bridges to our community outreach with the neighborhood and other programs reaching our high school youth.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: I'd like to see our Community Outreach Program reach more of our youth and neighborhood. The community char has done a fabolus job, and I just see the program growing. My hope is to continue to work together with the staff and faculty in moving our university to a higher profile in science, community and education.

Introduction: I am the Director of Records and Registration at the School of Social Work. My role at UMB-SSW is to provide a service to faculty, staff, and students on how to register for courses during the academic year. I collaborate with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in building, creating, changing and implementing old/new courses for the students to learn and faculty to teach. I also provide leadership for the office of Records and Registration here at the School of Social Work.
Interest in Serving on the Senate: I am interested in serving on the Staff Senate because I want to take my leadership skills to the next level. I am very passionate about advocating for my fellow colleagues and would like the opportunity to be that voice for them to make an impact at UMB.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?: I hope to accomplish during my term as a member of Staff Senate is to bring forth more staff development opportunities across campus. We have an excellent program called Emerging Leaders, however it is very limited to the number of participates and I believe if this program was apart of an interprofessional course, where staff can earn credit(s), this will give other staff members an opportunity to be apart of something great.
Hobbies/Interests: Currently I am pursuing another Master's degree in Information Technology from Towson University. All other activities beyond professional/job and academic actions are with my nieces and nephews. I play with them, I coach them, I mentor them, I go to football, basketball & track practice, get them into the STEM program in Harford County schools, and I develop them. My family is my life outside of work and my academics. I make time for them any way I can.
