Purpose: The purpose of the conference, “New Capabilities, Emerging Issues and Responsible Conduct in Data Management,” is to serve both as a forum for presenting information about key aspects of data management in developing research areas, and as a catalyst for generating dialogue among researchers in the life sciences about current practices in data management. The conference will be both practical and interactive. Presentations will include topics that address the high volume of data and the interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and cross-disciplinary nature of leading edge life science research. The conference will emphasize the importance of clear and explicit data management practices in order to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation of research findings included in relational data bases and in cross-disciplinary sharing of data. It will also explore the advantages and disadvantages of electronic notebooks and lab management systems in dealing with large amounts of data, and highlight the critical role of clear data management practices with regard to intellectual property issues. Sessions will discuss indicators of research misconduct, the elements of data management policies, best practices for data management, and the communication of professional standards regarding data management practices to trainees. Interactive group discussions will consider the specific issues and challenges of maintaining good data management practices in one’s own research group. Agenda:
