Founders Week Events

Gala – Oct. 14, 2017

The Founders Week Gala celebrates the University’s accomplishments and achievements and honors the Founders Week award winners. This year, we also will kick off UMB’s Catalyst for Change Campaign. For more information, please visit the Gala page.

Student Cookout – Oct. 16, 2017

A popular event as nearly 6,500 students are invited from our six professional schools and Graduate School. The president, deans, and vice presidents greet students as they enjoy festivities and good food in the courtyard of the School of Nursing. Registration opens in the early fall. 

Researcher of the Year Lecture – Oct. 17, 2017

The Researcher of the Year presents a lecture highlighting his/her work that exhibits excellence in innovative research. Visit the Founders Week website for more information and to see this year’s winner.

Entrepreneur of the Year Presentation and Reception – Oct. 18, 2017

The Entrepreneur of the Year will deliver a presentation demonstrating the impact of the entrepreneur’s breakthrough innovation. Visit the Founders Week website for more information and to see this year’s winner.

Staff Luncheon – Oct. 19, 2017

The Staff Luncheon at Westminster Hall is always a Founders Week highlight. More than 6,000 University employees of all levels are invited. Registration opens in the early fall.


Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month Commemoration – Feb. 1, 2018

Each year, UMB commemorates Black History Month with a keynote speaker chosen to exemplify diversity. In addition, UMB gives Diversity Recognition Awards for individual and/or group achievements in the areas of diversity and inclusiveness. Women’s History Month – March 15, 2018

Employee Recognition Luncheon

Each year, President Jay Perman, MD, recognizes employees of distinction by years of service, outstanding efforts, and special contributions to the University community. This event is by invitation only. 


Interprofessional Education Day – April 4, 2018

As health care evolves in the United States, there is a growing understanding that health care professionals need to work effectively in teams to optimize the outcomes of the care they provide to individuals, families, and communities. IPE Day is focused on students from all seven schools who combine their talents to solve real-world problems supervised by faculty. This is a special initiative of President Perman. State of the University Address – May 9, 2018

Each year, President Perman delivers the State of the University Address highlighting the successes of the previous year. This event is open to the entire University community and attended by a mix of faculty, staff, and students, in addition to key community, system, and political leaders. Commencement – May 18, 2018

Commencement marks the most important day of the year and typically takes place the third Friday each May with the Universitywide event at Royal Farms Arena. Graduates leave the arena with diplomas in hand. Students, families, and friends of the UMB community celebrate with a wide array of formal and informal activities and ceremonies. Individual school convocations are held separately that day or the day before at venues close to campus. Visit the Commencement website for additional information.

Speaker Series

Core Values

The UMB Core Values Speaker Series promotes the values of accountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, knowledge, and leadership. National and international leaders come to UMB to talk about their expertise and experiences to a broad University/communitywide audience.

The speaker series also provides an opportunity for the University to come together as one at stimulating cultural events that enhance the environment in which the University works and learns. Visit the Core Values Speaker Series website for additional information.

Diversity Advisory Council

The Diversity Advisory Council hosts UMB's Diversity Speaker Series on campus promoting diversity and inclusion at UMB. Visit the Diversity Advisory Council website for additional information.

The President’s Panel on Politics and Policy

The President's Panel on Politics and Policy is a speaker series examining issues important to the UMB community that are likely to be affected by the current presidential administration and Congress. 

With so much at stake in terms of health and higher education policy, federal budget priorities, and issues of civil rights and social justice, President Perman encourages the UMB community to take part in these timely conversations.
