Urban Art: Diggs-Johnson Middle School Celebrates Keith Haring at HS/HSL

On Jan. 9, 2009, Diggs-Johnson Middle School held an opening reception for its Urban Art Expo featuring art created by Diggs-Johnson students. Through a partnership with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the artwork was displayed in the Weise Gallery located in the Health Sciences and Human Services Library on the UMB campus. A silent auction was held with proceeds benefiting the school. Approximately $1,300 was raised during the expo! A closing reception was held on January 23 to celebrate. Back to top

UMB Faculty, Staff, and Students Help Local Students Develop Science Fair Projects

Volunteers from the University of Maryland, Baltimore schools of medicine and pharmacy assisted Diggs-Johnson Middle School students in preparing science fair projects this winter. The volunteers visited students in their science classes on Friday mornings during December 2008 and January 2009 and provided support by explaining scientific concepts, assisting students in preparing posters and materials, and encouraging participation. CLUB UMB

In February 2009, CLUB UMB—a new youth leadership initiative—was launched at George Washington Elementary and Diggs-Johnson Middle School. The program is an initiative of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Outreach Council to provide enriched educational, health, and career experiences and opportunities for schoolchildren through a coordinated partnership of the campus with targeted local community schools.



Academic support, career development, and early college awareness are goals of the CLUB UMB program. Fourth graders at George Washington Elementary and seventh graders at Diggs-Johnson Middle have been targeted this year. UMB student, faculty, and staff volunteers mentor, tutor, and support youth from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Thursday afternoons. The program also provides science demonstrations and health- and safety-related presentations as well as campus tours, career speakers, and other support for participating students.

Give Kids a Smile Day

On Feb. 6, 2009, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) hosted 60 children from the George Washington Elementary School for Give Kids a Smile Day at the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry. Give Kids a Smile Day is a public health event sponsored by the American Dental Association and dental professionals across the country. Students from the University of Maryland Dental School, under the supervision of faculty, provided fluoride varnish and dental exams for participating students. The event also included interactive activities for participants that foster positive attitudes toward dentistry and total body health. The general purpose of the event was to stimulate awareness of the importance of oral hygiene and proper nutrition and abstinence from tobacco products.  Back to top

Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy Career Fair

Faculty, staff, and students from the University of Maryland, Baltimore participated in the annual Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy Career Fair on March 25, 2009. Volunteers gave 30-minute presentations and took questions about their chosen careers and experiences in graduate school. Presentations also focused on the importance of higher education for health- and human service-related careers. Back to top

Diggs-Johnson Middle School Students Tour UMB

 

Students from Diggs-Johnson Middle School toured the UMB campus on April 30, 2009. UMB students, faculty, and staff participated in giving demonstrations, presentations, and tours. The middle school students got to see the Anatomy Lab in the School of Medicine and talk to social work students in the School of Social Work. They were given an overview of the campus and learned more about graduate school. Back to top

George Washington Elementary School Students Tour UMB

 

Students from George Washington Elementary School toured the UMB campus on May 18, 2009. UMB students, faculty, and staff gave demonstrations, presentations, and tours. The elementary school students got to see the Pharmacy Practice Lab, Nursing Simulation Labs, Dental Simulation Labs, the School of Social Work, and the Moot Court Room in the School of Law.
