International Student Admissions

The purpose of this section is to help prospective International Students with the special problems associated with obtaining a visa after they have been admitted to a particular University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) program. If you need general admissions information, click here.

International Students who will need to obtain a visa based on attendance at UMB must prove English Proficiency and Financial Responsibility. English Proficiency is proven by an official TOEFL score of at least 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, previous attendance at a U.S. institution, or proof that English is their native language. Financial Responsibility is proven by a variety of methods including personal savings, family sponsorship, government or international organization sponsorship or a Graduate Assistantship from UMB. In each case, we need a letter stating that the person or organization will sponsor the student, with a specific dollar amount and a bank statement showing that the person actually has the money. Below are estimated costs for one year at UMB, you must prove that you have at least this much money committed to your education in order to obtain visa papers from UMB. In addition, if you plan to bring family members to the United States, you should read the information below regarding family support and health insurance.

Please remember all admission decisions are based on academics and made by the program. English Proficiency scores and Financial Support information is only gathered for visa purposes.

Educational and Living Costs:
The Cost of Living figure has been estimated for a 12 Month Period. Educational Costs have been estimated for an Academic Year. Included in living expenses are rent, food, transportation and personal expenditures. Included in educational costs are tuition, fees, approximate book costs, instruments, uniforms, and other items as deemed necessary by individual schools.

Hospitalization Insurance is required for all UMB Students. You must prove that you have coverage equivalent to UMB's minimum requirements, or purchase the policy offered by UMB to all students. This cost is not included in the educational or living cost estimate.

The expenses of a married student are considerably more than that of a single student. In addition to funds for his/her own expenses, the married student must show that he/she has at least $4,000.00/per year for the support of a spouse and/or each dependent child who will accompany or follow him/her to the United States. If a spouse and/or dependent child is to accompany you to the University of Maryland Baltimore, we will need information in preparation for a visa. The information required is: Name, Relationship, Date of Birth, Place of Birth and Country of Citizenship.
