Former Defense Secretary William Cohen on '2012 Election: Current Events and U.S. Foreign Policy'

The deadly attacks on U.S. embassies in the Middle East were still raging when they became flash points in the presidential campaign between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. Important questions regarding America's relationship with Israel continue to pop up. What should we do about strongmen in Russia and Iran? Is there hope for Syria?

Issues like these form the background for a speech by William S. Cohen, secretary of defense under President Clinton, at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Cohen will address "A Global Context for the 2012 Election: Current Events and U.S. Foreign Policy" in his remarks during the Dean's Convocation at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.

Cohen, a Republican from Maine, served in the House and Senate before being chosen to head the Department of Defense in Clinton's second term. He was honored during his years in office by groups as disparate as the National Federation of Independent Business and the League of Conservation Voters.

Others who will speak at the event include former Senator Joseph D. Tydings, '53, who will receive the Distinguished Graduate Award, and Dean Phoebe Haddon, JD, LLM.
