University of Maryland Plans a Full Week of Activities to Welcome Back Students

The University of Maryland in Baltimore is welcoming back its students with an array of activities at the Southern Management Corporation (SMC) Campus Center including the ice cream social for new students hosted by President Jay A. Perman, MD, URecFit for a Cause contests, movie night, an academic symposium, open mic night, and much more!

Trying to meet new people in the first week of school is daunting but trying to meet people from all seven schools of the University is a greater challenge. That is why the SMC Campus Center staff has organized a week of events to bring together students, faculty, and staff. The schedule spans everything from academic help, such as writing consultants and resume tips, to fun contests like garden games and electronic bowling.

"Welcome Week is still a relatively new concept here at the University of Maryland," said Roger J. Ward, EdD, JD, MPA, interim vice president of academic affairs and interim dean of the Graduate School. "It plays an important role in building new traditions on our campus."

It also gives the SMC Campus Center a chance to show off the different services that it offers since opening in 2009. The Wellness Hub, URecFit, Student Life Services, Event Services, and Bon Appetit food service company (all located in the SMC Campus Center) will each be participating in the Welcome Week.

Some activities will be continuous while others will be available on a set schedule.

There will be a scavenger hunt, set to last Monday through Thursday, which allows participants to discover the Campus Center by picking up a self-guided tour sheet from the information desk and filling it out to be entered for raffle prizes upon completion as well as panels and workshops offered throughout the week.

"Welcome Week is a fantastic opportunity to bring our students together to show them that they are a part of a greater community while cultivating connections that will last into their professional careers," Ward says.
