University of Maryland President Jay A. Perman, MD, and University of Maryland Medical Center President and CEO Jeffrey A. Rivest, FACHE, were interviewed on Maryland Public Television's "Direct Connection" on June 20 about their new unified logo and other collaborations between the institutions.
Anchor Jeff Salkin began by asking about the new visual identity, unveiled on May 12, and Perman responded, "We are living in an age when we have to collaborate to provide health care in teams. We have to do research in teams.
"At the University, we have had so many different logos for the different schools, within the schools, it's time we had a unified identity within the [University], and that's what we have accomplished. And we have gone beyond that. We have recognized that a critical partner in so much of what we do is the Medical Center."
Perman described the University of Maryland and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) as a "family."
Rivest was asked whether the public believes the University and the UMMC are one institution. "The public may think of us as one institution and, on one level, that's a good thing. We work very closely together. We are a very integrated team," he said. "They are separate institutions. The hospital was privatized in 1984 for the reasons of efficiency because running a hospital is very different from running a university. What we do want the public to know is that all of our faculty are full-time members of the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and we work very closely with the other health care schools on the campus. It brings us a great set of talent. It brings us the differential that a lot of hospitals don't have."
He continued, "The collaboration has always been there. We want to make sure the public and the citizens of Maryland know that we are working closely together."
The interview, which can be viewed here, also discussed issues such as the Board of Regents' study of a proposed merger between the University and the University of Maryland, College Park and trends facing health care providers in the years ahead.
