Katherine L. Vaughns (1945 - 2013)

Katherine L. Vaughns, University of Maryland Carey School of Law professor, and well known supporter of the arts, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer after a short illness. She was 68.

The daughter of insurance brokers who operated their own business, Katherine Linda Vaughns was born in Oakland, California and raised in the neighboring City of Berkeley. She received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of California at Berkeley.

A member of the Carey School of Law faculty for almost thirty years, Professor Vaughns taught immigration law and policy, complex litigation and remedies.ý She wrote and published articles in several subject areas, but primarily in the area of immigration law.ý Two recent articles on immigration policy will be published posthumously.ý Before joining the law faculty she was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California in the Civil Division.

During her legal academic career Professor Vaughns was active in a variety of national professional organizations, including the American Bar Association Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar and the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession.ý She had a long interest in improving the performance of law graduates, serving on the Law School Admissions Councilýs Bar Passage Study Work Group, the Association of American Law Schools' Committee on Bar Admission and Lawyer Performance, as well as the California Committee of Bar Examiners.

Professor Vaughns was active in the Baltimore community as well, serving on the Baltimore City Charter Revision Commission and the Executive Council of the Baltimore City Bar Association where she was a member of the Baltimore Bar Foundation board.

In recent years "Kathy", as she is fondly remembered, was as a tireless booster of the arts in Baltimore, especially Center Stage where she was a member of the Board of Trustees serving as Secretary of the Executive Committee. ýShe also served on the Maryland Film Festivalýs Board of Directors as its Secretary.ý

An early marriage to Lloyd Tooks, a California lawyer, ended in divorce.ý The couple had no children.ý Her brother, James H. Vaughns, died in 2006.ý She leaves behind a beloved cousin, Judy Ford, a retired California judge, a sister-in-law, Juanita Vaughns of El Cerrito, California, a niece, Joy Vaughns of Berkeley and a nephew, James Philip Vaughns of Oakland.
