UM Public Access AED Program
The University recognizes the serious threat posed by Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) which strikes over 300, 000 people in the United States each year. These attacks can happen to anyone at anytime with virtually no notice or immediately after the onset of symptoms. The survival rate for these attacks outside of a medical facility is between 1 and 5%. The only effective treatment, outside of a medical facility, is the use of defibrillation to restore a normal heart rhythm. This is best done using an Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) unit in conjunction with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The AED is a simple to use device that can restore a victim’s heart to normal function. It is vital that the use of defibrillation take pace as soon as possible since chances of survival drop by as much as 10% per minute without such treatment. First Aid and CPR are vital components of this program.
AEDs have been placed in a number of campus facilities. Check the UM AED Locations. In addition to the AEDs, a number of university personnel have been trained in the proper use of the AED as well as CPR and first aid. Trained Onsite UM Coordinators.
CPR classes for employees not designated as AED On-Site Coordinators are offered through Human Resources’ Work/ Life Strategies group.
Note: The Campus utilizes Physio-Control Lifepak 500 and 1000 AEDs. Future plans call for installation of Physio Control LifePak Express units.
The Medical Director of the Immediate Care Center, serves as the Medical Officer for this program. EHS is the coordinating department for the program. Questions or concerns can be sent to email@example.com.
