Delirium

Delirium is defined as a sudden change in mental status. These resources will improve your ability and confidence to identify and intervene with older adults experiencing an episode of delirium.

The video production, You Can Save a Life, is about the detection of delirium through the observation of a nursing assistant at an assisted living facility.

Geriatric Nursing Assistants

After completing the web-based module, the Geriatric Nursing Assistant will be able to:

  1. Recognize physical and mental changes in a long term care resident who is experiencing a sudden change in mental status (delirium).
  2. Identify specific signs and symptoms of a change in mental status.
  3. Communicate symptoms of a resident’s change in mental status to the charge nurse or member of the health care team.

  1. Describe physical, behavioral, and cognitive signs and symptoms in an older adult who is experiencing a sudden change in mental status (delirium).
  2. Discuss supportive interventions for an older adult who has signs and symptoms of delirium.
