National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program (LRP) offers primary care medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health providers the opportunity to have their student loans, or a portion thereof, repaid in exchange for working in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). HPSAs are rural, urban and frontier communities across the United States with limited access to care.

As with every loan repayment assistance program, there are specific qualifications borrowers must meet and requirements regarding which loans are eligible for repayment assistance. A sampling of stipulations from the NHSC Loan Repayment Program can be found below:

  • Government and commercial loans used for education and related expenses are eligible for repayment assistance
  • Loan repayments are exempt from federal income and employment taxes
  • Parent PLUS loans are not eligible for repayment assistance
  • Cosigned loans are not eligible for repayment assistance

The National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program Application Guidance contains a detailed explanation of the program rules. Read the section entitled, “ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATION FACTORS and FUNDING PREFERENCES” in order to determine your eligibility for participation in the NHSC Loan Repayment Program (LRP).
