DESCRIPTION The University of Maryland (UMB) is comprised of six strong professional schools and an interdisciplinary graduate school that educate students, conduct research, and provide clinical services in dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work. By offering combined degrees with other Maryland institutions, performing cutting-edge research and technology transfer, UMB has become one of the nation's well-recognized collaborative academic health centers, also serving as a hub of regional economic development.
MISSION STATEMENT The University of Maryland is the state's public academic health and law university devoted to professional and graduate education, research, patient care, and public service. Using state-of-the-art technological support, UMB educates leaders in health care delivery, biomedical science, social services, and law. By conducting internationally recognized research to cure disease and to improve the health, social functioning, and just treatment of the people we serve, the campus fosters economic development in the state. UMB is committed to ensuring that the knowledge it generates provides maximum benefit to society, directly enhancing the community. See our campus leadership from the president, vice presidents, and deans and the Board of Trustees. Research is one of the cornerstones of the University's mission. All seven schools conduct research that helps shape patient care and policy on a national, state, and local level. From medical imaging and drug purity to environmental law and schizophrenia, UMB faculty members are respected leaders in their research communities. In the spring of 2007, the University enrolled more than 5,400 students.

There is no national organization that ranks dental schools, but in the examination given by the National Board of Dental Examiners in July of 1999, UMB Dental school graduates had the sixth-highest pass rate in the nation.

- The School of Social Work (www.ssw.umaryland.edu), is 19th in the 2004 U.S. News rankings. Social work faculty members rank 7th in journal article publication and productivity among the 61 doctorate-conferring social work programs in the United States.
