Plaza Garage (University Square)
500 W. Redwood Street
Fire Box 13-38
The Plaza Garage is a five level below ground pre-cast concrete structure of fire resistive construction with a landscaped park on the roof of the facility at ground level. The structure covers one square city block.
The garage has an interior fire alarm system consisting of manual pull stations, and heat detectors at the elevator lobbies which transmit a signal to the Pine Street Police Station. A dry pipe sprinkler system has been installed throughout the facility, with water flow devices and valve supervisory switches interconnected to the building fire alarm system.
Portable fire extinguishers in "break glass" cabinets are provided in various locations.
Fire department suppression equipment is limited to dry standpipes in the main entrance/exit located on the Redwood Street side (south) and three stairways located at the northwest, northeast, and south sides. The exterior doors to these stairways are located on the common level and entrance may only be gained by keys kept in the garage attendants booth. The fire department Siamese connections for the stand pipes are located at the main entrance/exit and at the southeast corner of the common area (Redwood and Paca). Knox FDC caps have been installed on the fire department connections to prevent vandalism.
A Knox Box has been installed next to the fire alarm annunciator with keys for elevators, mechanical areas, electric areas and fire alarm panels to be used by the fire department as needed. A key for the Knox FDC caps is also located in the Knox Box.
This building is classified as a Storage occupancy.
