Dental School High Rise
Dental School High Rise
366,000 Sq. Ft.
Baltimore & Arch Streets
Fire Box 13-58
The Dental School High Rise is a ten story building of protected steel and fire resistive construction and brick faced exterior walls. The facility contains offices, classrooms, labs, clinics, and conference rooms for the Dental School.
The building is totally protected with standpipes and a wet pipe sprinkler system except for the loading dock which has a dry pipe system. Fire department hose valves are located in both stairwells. There are also hose valve connections in the exit corridors approximately half-way between the stairwells. The fire department sprinkler connection is located on the southeast corner of the building on Baltimore Street. Knox FDC caps have been installed on the fire department connections to prevent vandalism.
Portable fire extinguishers are located throughout the facility.
A complete fire alarm system consisting of manual pull stations, voice audible/visual alarms, sprinkler water flow and valve supervisory devices, beam smoke detectors (supervisory) and duct smoke detectors (supervisory) has been installed and is interconnected to the Pine Street Police Station.
A fire command center is located in the main lobby next to the elevators just inside the main entrance. The fire alarm control panel, an annunciator panel, elevator status panel, smoke control panel, generator panel, firefighter phone handsets and fire shutter status panels are located in the fire command center.
Firefighter telephone jacks are located within each stairway landing and each elevator lobby.
Both exit stairwells are pressurized. Both atriums are equipped with engineered smoke evacuation systems. Windows on the lower level and first floors of the South Atrium open to provide make-up air for the smoke evacuation system. Windows on the East side of the 4th floor in the North Atrium open as well. The smoke evacuation system operates upon activation of any sprinkler flow switch in the building or beam smoke detectors in the atriums. Overhead fire shutters are installed on South atrium openings on floors 2-4 and close automatically upon activation of the building fire alarm system. Shutters need to be manually reset following a fire alarm activation. A key is in the Knox Box to reset the shutters. Key slots are located on floors 2-4 across from the SW exit stairwell. Each shutter has to be reset individually.
The building is equipped with an emergency generator that powers all life safety systems in the event of loss of power.
There are 2-two hour rated stairwells in the building with adequate exiting capacity. One is at the North end and one on the West side near the South Atrium. Exits directly to the outside of the building are located on the North, West, and South ends of the building (main entrance) on the first and ground floors.
Fire department suppression equipment has access to the North, East and South sides of the structure on Baltimore, Fayette and Arch Streets.
A Knox Box has been installed in the fire command center with keys for elevators, mechanical areas, electric areas and fire alarm panels to be used by the fire department as needed.
Access by persons with disabilities is via the main entrance located on the South side of the building in the center.
This building is a Business, Assembly, and Ambulatory Health Care occupancy.
