Fire Hazard: Plastics in Ovens and Autoclaves

Two recent fires at the University of Maryland Baltimore have brought to light the need for following proper procedures when using ovens and autoclaves on campus. Plastic lids and other plastic laboratory materials should not be placed into ovens and autoclaves as they may melt and catch on fire. In one case there was a warning sign posted on the door to the autoclave warning people not to place plastics into the appliance. Please pay attention to warning signs and proper fire safety procedures in all University Buildings.

Contact the University Fire Marshal at 410.706.3494 if you have any questions on the above issues or need suggestions on how to prevent fires or other accidents in your lab. Thank you for your efforts to improve safety at the University.
