SOP Statement on DACA Termination
September 07, 2017
Dear faculty, staff, and students,
Yesterday, you received an email from UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD, about President Trump's decision to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program allowing undocumented residents brought to the U.S. as children to remain in the country without fear of deportation. The letter also provided the contact information for Amy Ramirez, the director of international students in the Office of Academic Affairs, and encouraged DACA students and employees to contact her for guidance.
At the School of Pharmacy, some of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni may be directly affected by this decision. Please know that the School of Pharmacy supports you and offers its assistance during this uncertain time.
PharmD students with concerns should contact Dr. Cherokee Layson-Wolf. PhD students in PSC should contact Dr. Sarah Michel, and PhD students in PHSR should contact Dr. Frank Palumbo. Faculty and staff should contact Nancy Bowers. Students in our online MS programs should contact their respective program administrators.
Additionally, UMB's Student Counseling Center is an excellent resource and can be reached at 410-328-8404, as is the Universities at Shady Grove's Center for Counseling and Consultation, which can be reached at 301-738-6273.
Ms. Ramirez has scheduled the following listening sessions for the UMB community to come together to dialogue respectfully on this important issue:
- Friday, Sept. 8, 1 - 2 p.m. in Room 353 of the SMC Campus Center
- Tuesday, Sept. 12, Noon - 1 p.m. in Room 115 of the SMC Campus Center
- Wednesday, Sept. 13, 4 - 5 p.m. in Room 115 of the SMC Campus Center
I encourage faculty, staff, and students to attend a session if you are able.
As President Perman stated, UMB and the School of Pharmacy are enriched by the contributions of all our colleagues. Especially now, I ask that we all continue to live our Core Values of respect, integrity, and professionalism; social responsibility; excellence; diversity, and leadership in support of those impacted.
