Services

The UMB Student Counseling Center is available to currently enrolled full and-part-time students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Services are covered by tuition and student health fees, so there are no out-of-pocket expenses.

In general, students are eligible to receive up to 6 counseling sessions per semester and up to 12 sessions per academic year. However, same-day cancellations and no-shows to these appointments count against your total allocated number of sessions.

During your initial interview, your counselor will work with you to clarify your concerns and goals for treatment.  At the end of the evaluation period, your counselor will work with you to develop a general plan for working toward your goals.

In some circumstances, if it is determined that more intensive or specialized services are required to meet your needs than the UMB Student Counseling Center can provide, your Counselor or Psychiatrist may refer you to another provider or to a more appropriate community alternative. There may be other circumstances where your needs can be met within the Counseling Center, but only by seeing both a Counselor and a Psychiatrist concurrently on an ongoing basis.

Counseling
Services are provided by a caring, multiculturally diverse staff of licensed social workers. We understand that “trying harder” and “being stronger” doesn’t always work. We can give you a fresh perspective on your problems and tools to resolve them.

For Individuals
We assist students in resolving issues that cause emotional distress, and interfere with personal goals and academic success.

For Couples
We offer heterosexual and homosexual couples help with their relationship problems. Counseling can be used to gain insight into each other, to learn new and more effective ways of communication, and to improve problem-solving skills.

Medication
Evaluation and management is provided by board certified Psychiatrists. There is no limit to these visits. Students who need to see the Psychiatrist for medication evaluation or monitoring must first schedule an intake appointment with a Counselor. There may be times when the Psychiatrist determines that the student must be seen concurrently by a Counselor. This is determined on a case-by-case basis. Please refer to Medication Policies for more detail.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Classes
8 week classes offered once per semester. These classes will help you concentrate better using meditation techniques, tune into your body through the use of gentle yoga and body-scan techniques, sleep better, feel healthier in body and mind, and work more efficiently.

Referrals for Testing
The Counseling Center, in cooperation with the Office of Student Services, offers preliminary screening and referrals for learning disabilities.

Referral to a Community Agency
Because we offer short-term counseling, the Counseling Center provides referrals to appropriate community resources to students whose needs are beyond the scope of our services.

Consultation
We provide consultation to staff and faculty members who may be concerned about a particular student but aren’t sure how to approach him/her. Counselors are available to answer questions or offer suggestions on how to handle a difficult situation with a student. For more information, see the Guide for Faculty and Staff.

Community Outreach
We provide educational outreach to the University community on topics related to emotional well being. To find out when a program will be held, check our website, or look for publications around campus announcing events. The staff is available for presentations upon request.

Resources
The Counseling Center has a multimedia library of resources related to mental health, available to UMB students.
