UMB Student Counseling Center

Administrative Referrals
Please first contact the Director of the Counseling Center, Emilia K. Petrillo, LCSW-C at 410-328-8404 to discuss all potential administrative referrals.

Non-Administrative Referrals
It is preferable to have the student make the initial contact with the Counseling Center themselves. Advise the student to call 410-328-8404 during normal business hours (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to schedule an appointment. The Counseling Center is open until 7:00 p.m. two evenings/week and can accommodate students who require an evening appointment.

Broaching the Topic with a Student
Express your recommendation in a straightforward manner. Make it clear that this recommendation represents your best judgment based on your observations of the student's behavior.

Reluctance
Sometimes it helps to remind the student that it is common for people in professional school to seek counseling as part of their professional and personal growth. It is also helpful to mention Counseling Center policies concerning Confidentiality.

Initial Appointments
Appointments are usually scheduled one to two weeks from the time of initial contact. If a student requires immediate assistance, please contact the Director, Emilia K. Petrillo, LCSW-C at 410-328-8404.

Medication
Students who need to see the Psychiatrist exclusively for medication evaluation or monitoring must first schedule an intake appointment with a Counselor. There may be times when the Psychiatrist determines that the student must be seen concurrently by a counselor. This is determined on a case-by-case basis. Refer to Medication Policies for more detail.

Follow-up
If you are interested in knowing whether the student has followed through on your referral to the Counseling Center, please discuss this with the student.  Except in the event of threat of imminent harm, the Counseling Center cannot share information about whether a student has made or kept an appointment unless the student has signed a Counseling Center Release of Information form allowing us to do so.
