Getting Started
The UM Student Counseling Center provides services to currently enrolled students. The Center works on an appointment-only basis. It is not an emergency service. However, brief 15 minute consultations are available for urgent situations. To schedule an appointment, call (410) 328-8404 or stop by the HS/HSL Library at 601 W. Lombard St., Suite 440. When leaving a message, please leave times when you can be reached during normal business hours.
Your first appointment with a counselor will usually occur within 2-3 weeks of your initial phone call. However, during peak times in the academic year, it can take 2-4 weeks for a routine evaluation. If you need immediate assistance, please alert us. You will be asked to present your student ID at each visit.
Hours
Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and limited evening hours on Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment only. Evening appointments are not available for first-time visits.
First Appointment
Please allocate 90 minutes for your first session. When you arrive you will be asked to complete electronic forms on one of our office laptops. These include Informed Consent for Services, Client Contact Information, and Client Information. After you complete these forms, you will return the laptop to our front desk staff member. The information is electronically submitted and your intake clinician reviews the information before meeting with you. All of the information collected on the Client Information Form is voluntary. On that form, you do not have to respond to any question you do not want to complete. All electronically collected information is stored in our electronic database which is only accessible by Counseling Center staff and not accessible by any other UM faculty or staff.
The first session is not a counseling session. During that meeting, your counselor determines your course of treatment. If your counselor determines that your needs exceed the services that the Center is intended to provide, we will provide you with referrals and temporary support while you seek outside services. If your counselor determines that the Counseling Center is an appropriate setting for your treatment, starting with the second session the focus shifts to the issues that brought you to counseling.
Medication
If you are seeking medication evaluation and/or management services, you must have completed an intake evaluation with a counselor before you are permitted to schedule an appointment with the psychiatrist. Routine medication evaluations may require an additional 1-2 weeks after your counselor has met with you. Please refer to Medication Information for more details.
Late Cancellations and No-Shows
In general, you are eligible to receive up to 6 counseling sessions per semester and up to 12 sessions per academic year. However, same-day cancellations and no-shows count against your allocated number of sessions.
After Hours
If you need assistance after hours, call Student and Employee Health at 410-328-8792. Messages left on the SCC voice mail outside of normal working hours (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.) are returned the next business day. For mental health emergencies, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Lunch Hour Voice Mail
Voice mail is activated during the lunch hour and messages are promptly returned afterward. If urgent matters arise during that time, or if you are calling to make an administrative referral, you may press 0 for assistance from a Counselor.
