Bibliotherapy involves use of books, workbooks, audio books and visuals such as movies. Your counselor might "prescribe" a workbook, book, CD or DVD as part of your work in therapy. Research has shown it to be effective in the treatment of depression. Anxiety and panic symptoms have also responded positively to the use of bibliotherapy as a supplemental approach to treatment (Excerpted from Minnesota Psychological Association).
The UMB Counseling Center has its own collection of these materials, located in the HS/HSL library. They are available for students to check out and take home. Below is a listing of the Counseling Center Collection by category. We have a large collection, but only a few items are listed here. Thank you for your patience as we work on populating the pages with this extensive collection. Please feel free to explore and check out any materials of interest.
The Anger Control Workbook…carefully and clearly shows how feelings of anger rip up people’s guts, destroy their relationships, and have many other disadvantages…Indicates how readers can constructively work—and keep working—to minimize anger and rage…Includes many exceptionally useful and practical self-help techniques and exercises. —Albert Ellis, Ph.D., President, Albert Ellis Institute, New York, and author, A Guide to Rational Living
The Shyness & Social Anxiety Workbook “Social anxiety and shyness can become so intense that they prevent people from enjoying life. This book is ideal for anyone who wants to learn to be more comfortable around other people. Drs. The step-by-step strategies described in this book have been shown to be effective, are easy to understand, and are sure to help the reader cope better in social situations. Anyone who experiences significant anxiety when performing or when interacting with other people should read this book!”

Your Perfect Right Assertiveness and Equality in Your Life and Relationships "...Of all the books on my bookshelf, this is probably the one that i have recommended the most. the authors do an excellent job of motivating people to assertiveness, describing the difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness (something i repeatedly do with patients because these concepts were not well defined for them in the past), and providing a practical guide for people to improve their assertiveness. the end of the book has a helpful section on deciding when to be assertive and reviews various questions to consider at the time you are trying to decide if the current situation is a battle worth picking."

The Accomplishing More with Less Workbook "...Too many of us have too much to do, too much information and too many interruptions. Pierre helps us understand why we feel overwhelmed and how we can change with very simple and practical techniques. I love the "Maybe Later" box! Whether you take baby steps or giant steps, I guarantee Pierre's techniques will help you accomplish more - maybe with the same time rather than less..."

The Food and Feelings Workbook "Koenig has organized this convenient workbook into sections that reflect 7 difficult feelings: guilt, shame, helplessness, anxiety, disappointment, confusion, and loneliness. She uses "Stop and Feel" questions throughout the book to help people exercise those seldom-used feeling muscles. She includes "Change Boosters" to practice new behaviors about feelings and eating. So, she gets you practicing this new skill, which you've avoided all your life. And she does it all with her usual wit, personal style, and generous helping spirit." by Karma B. Kitaj
Coming Out of Shame: Transforming Gay and Lesbian Lives "Kaufman and Raphael explain how one emotion--shame--affects, overwhelmingly negatively, the lives of homosexuals and what gay individuals and couples can do to transcend shame's ill effects. They neatly dovetail theory, illustrative anecdotes, and prescriptive advice as they exhaustively survey the almost innumerable ways in which shame undermines personal security, happiness, and mental health."

Up From Grief: Patterns of Recovery. "This is a great book. It was first given to me by a High School teacher when my father suddenly died. This book helps you know what your head is going to go through during the grief process. Knowing helps you to know you are not going crazy. You'll think oh, the phone's ringing, maybe it's ..... oh, yeah, they're dead. Instead of punishing yourself for such thoughts, you now know such thoughts are natural and go with it. Years ago this book went out of print and we'd hunt copies down from old book warehouses. We always keep one or two on the shelf to loan out to people."
