Avoid the NIH Page Size Error

As of July 1, 2013, NIH added a new error validation that rejects applications with ANY pages over 8.5 in x 11 in. The size requirement is not new, but the fact that a SINGLE PAGE being slightly off in size will stop a proposal is a new twist (and challenge).

Please be sure to check all of the pages of your narratives in NIH applications to ensure that they all conform to the 8.5 in x 11 in limit.  You can do so in the properties of the PDF. When using this function to check the size, please know that the properties show for the current page in the PDF (not the entire document at once). This means that you need to check EACH PAGE of your narratives to ensure the correct size of every page. Under normal circumstances, SPA will not have the resources to check the size of each page of a proposal. This could be an especially frustrating issue (and one that could result in a proposal not being accepted by the deadline) when proposals are submitted close to the deadline.

To avoid the error, we (and other research administrators) have found 2 solutions. When you "print to pdf" please be double sure that you are choosing the correct page size (letter/8.5 x 11). Last resort solution (especially when you don't have the source Word document) is to print and scan the document (then double check the page size).
