Maryland Covering Kids and Families (MCK&F) is a group led by the President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. It's mission is to help parents obtain private or public health insurance for their children. MCK&F has 4 areas of the state that it provides outreach to: Western Maryland (Garrett, Allegany, and Washington Counties), Baltimore City, Prince George's and Montgomery Counties, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland (all counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland). The MCK&F group provides outreach workers to enroll children in health insurance programs at schools, homes, special events, and businesses. Support for the MCK&F group comes from a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant. A majority of the estimated 10 million uninsured children in the United States are eligible for Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) but are not enrolled. Most come from homes where at least one parent works full-time. Many Americans are not aware of public and private health coverage programs available for children in working families. In fact, a 2000 Covering Kids national survey found that six out of 10 parents whose uninsured children qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP did not believe those free or low-cost public health care programs were meant for them.
