Connecting with the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client (Windows)

BEFORE INSTALLING or CONNECTING to the Cisco AnyConnect Client:

Installing the AnyConnect Secure VPN client

  • Point your browser to http://vpn.umaryland.edu. When prompted, enter your myUM id, password and select the VPN group you have been assigned to from the drop down list.

The Cisco AnyConnect client download will begin.

  • If you receive a certificate warning such as the one below, click Yes to accept the certificate and continue the installation.

  • If a security message about Active X appears, allow it to run.
  • If a message appears that asks if it is ok to install vpnweb.cab, choose yes.
  • The installer windows will appear. 

Depending upon your connection speed, the download & install times will vary.  Please be patient!

  • Once the installation has completed, the message “Install Successful – Please wait while the VPN connection is established.” will be displayed. You should now see the icon in the system tray that indicates connection.  This icon, represented by two green dots and a gold lock, is circled in the image below.

  • Close the browser.

Disconnecting the AnyConnect VPN client

  • Right click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client icon in your system tray.
  • Select Open.
  • From the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client screen, choose Disconnect.

Reconnecting to the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

You can connect to the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client using two different methods:

Method 1:

  • Login in at http://vpn.umaryland.edu.

  • Click Start AnyConnect and follow the instructions for Installing the AnyConnect VPN Client again.

OR

Method 2:

From the Start menu:

  • Click the Cisco folder to open it.

  • Click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client folder to open it.  You’ll see the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client program in the folder.

  • Click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

  • On the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client screen, choose the appropriate VPN Group for you from the GROUP pull-down menu.

  • Enter your myUM id and password.

  • Click Connect.

When you are connected, you will see the icon, located in the system tray, which indicates connection.  This icon, represented by two green dots and a gold lock, is circled in the image below.

Cisco Any Connect VPN Client Requirements

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN client is a web-based VPN client that does not require user configuration. Using the VPN client, sometimes referred to as IP tunneling, is a secure method of accessing UM computer resources.  Below are the workstation/user requirements needed to utilize this resource.

What You Need before Connecting

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client  is downloaded and installed via WebLaunch; you must use the 32-bit versions or Internet Explorer or Firefox for the install.

Microsoft Windows

For WebLaunch, use Internet Explorer 6.0+ or Firefox 2.0+, and enable ActiveX or install Sun JRE 1.4+ (available at http://www.java.com).

Windows Versions

  • Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

    • AnyConnect requires a clean install if you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7.

    • If you upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, manually uninstall AnyConnect first, then after the upgrade, reinstall it by establishing a web-based connection to the vpn web page.

  • Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)—SP2 or Vista Service Pack 1 with KB952876.

  • Windows XP SP2 and SP3.

Windows Requirements

  • Pentium class processor or greater.
  • x64 or x86 processors.
  • 5 MB hard disk space.
  • RAM:
    • 256 MB for Windows XP.
    • 512 MB for Windows Vista.
    • 512 MB for Windows 7.
  • Microsoft Installer, version 3.1.

Mac OS

MAC versions

  • Mac OS X 10.5

  • Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.6.1 (both 32-bit and 64-bit).

    • If you upgrade from one major Mac OS X release to another (for example 10.5 to 10.6), manually uninstall AnyConnect first, then after the upgrade, reinstall it by establishing a web-based connection the vpn web page.

AnyConnect requires 50MB of hard disk space.

Internet Explorer Users:

  • How to add the VPN security appliance to the List of Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer.
    • From the IE browser
      • Tools - Internet Options - Trusted Sites

      • Click the Security tab.

      • Click the Trusted Sites icon.

      • Click Sites.

      • The Trusted Sites window opens.

      • Type http://vpn.umaryland.edu.

      • Click Add, then Click OK several times

Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox users:

  • If you get a "Certified by an Unknown Authority" display, install a self-signed certificate

      • Click the Examine Certificate button in the "Web Site Certified by an Unknown Authority" window. 

      • Click the "Accept this certificate permanently" option.

      • Click OK.

      • The security appliance window opens, signifying the certificate is trusted.   

Other requirements:

  • An active internet connection
  • Ability to install the software on the workstation – Local Admin rights required for installation
  • A valid myUM account name and password for authentication
