Information about the Campus Anti-SPAM Service

Why are you receiving a quarantine message?

The reason you are receiving a quarantine message periodically is because the UMB Campus Anti-SPAM relay server has received e-mail addressed to you that has been determined to be SPAM.

The purpose of this system is to limit the amount of SPAM received by you.

Messages determined to be SPAM by the Meridius server are held in a quarantine mailbox. You can visit your quarantine box to read, release, or delete quarantined messages. You are in control over the messages that are deleted and which ones you would like to have delivered. When you release mail, this action means that you want to receive it and the system forwards it to your e-mailbox. If you delete it, this action means that the mail is in fact SPAM and the e-mail will be deleted. Please note: Deleted messages are held in the Deleted Items folder only until 2:00 am the next morning and cannot be restored after it’s purged from the system.

What to do when you receive an e-mail message?

When you receive an e-mail message informing you that Meridius has quarantined your e-mail, click the link inside this notification to connect to your personal Quarantine e-mailbox. An example of the mailbox is shown below in Figure 1. You can use this Web page to manage your quarantined messages:

Review the list of messages in the Quarantine Mailbox. The Web page displays four columns of information about each message: From, Subject, Date, Size.

2. The page displays up to 20 messages. If you have more than 20 items in your mailbox, click the 2 or > link at the bottom of the page to go to the second page of messages. The number and arrow links allow you to quickly navigate through your mailbox.

3. To change the mailbox’s default setting so that it displays more or less than 20 messages at a time, click the arrow in the top-right corner Entries per page to open a drop-down list, and then choose a value from the list. You can display as few as five messages on each page or as many as 500. (The default value can be set permanently in user Preferences).

4. To open and read a particular message, click its link in the Subject column. The message opens on your screen.

5. After reading the message, you can release it from the Quarantine Mailbox and send it to your regular inbox by clicking Release at the top of the page.

6. If the message is in fact SPAM and you want to permanently erase it, click Delete.

7. To return to the mailbox’s front page, click Back To Message List.

8. You can release multiple messages from the Quarantine Mailbox at the same time. Select each message by clicking its link and then click Release at the top or bottom of the page.

9. You can also delete more than one item at the same time by selecting the delete box beside each message and then clicking Delete. You can delete all messages by clicking Empty.

10. All mail that is deleted or emptied is place in the Deleted Items tab. Messages are kept here until 2:00 a.m. and will permanently delete them at that time. To release a message that was accidentally deleted, click on the Deleted Items tab then select the message to be released. Then click either Release or Release and Always Allow and the message will be sent to you local e-mail server.

11. You can add a sender e-mail addresses to the allow/block filters by selecting the message and clicking Release and Always Allow or Delete & Always Block. This will add the sender’s e-mail address to the allow list or block list depending on what was clicked on.

12. You are only allowed to have 300 Allow and 300 Blocked lists under your filters tab. If you reach the max number of filters, a pop up message will tell you that no more filters can be added.

13. To help narrow down your filters click on the Filter tab. On the filter page you will find all of the filters you currently have stored. If you find that you have multiple sender addresses from the same domain and would like to convert them to a single filter, you only need to select one of the addresses and then click on Convert. This will bring up a pop up window asking if you want to delete all entries with the sender’s domain and add a single domain entry. Click OK to continue with the conversion.

14. When you finish working with messages in the Quarantine Mailbox, simply close the browser window. Please remember that messages will be kept for only a limited time – currently 21 days but subject to change.

Note: Online help is provided for additional functions available in the main mailbox page and other pages. Click the to access online Help. To return to the mail screen from On-line help, click the tab.
