Preventing Cheating Online

There is no way to prevent cheating completely when an online assessment is given without a proctor. However, there a ways to make it difficult for casual cheaters, or to keep students honest who might otherwise be tempted to cheat. One of the most obvious ways to cheat online is to copy test questions and paste them into a document that's then given to other students, or print out the entire exam. You can prevent this in a Blackboard exam by pasting the following code at the bottom of your assessment's instructions:

<style type="text/css" media="print">@import url("http://www.umaryland.edu/eLearning/cheating/noprint.css");</style><script language="JavaScript" src=http://www.umaryland.edu/eLearning/cheating/nocopy.js></script>

This will not work in all cases, but it will prevent the majority of Web browsers from copying text or printing a page.
