Blackboard Steering Committee
Minutes for 10/13/05
Prepared by: Chris Klimas
Attendees: Chris Klimas (Pharmacy), Shannon Tucker (Pharmacy), Lowell Wilson (CITS), Jim Leoni (CITS), Dave Pitts (SSW), Bob Bennett (Dental), Lila Faulkner (Law), Buzz Merrick (HR), Fran Dominguez (CITS), James Craig (Dental), Matt Rietschel (Nursing), Kevin So (Nursing), Vavian Cox (CITS), Alex Mayo (HS/HSL)
The demo of QuestionMark is all set up -- all that remains is to install the Building Block on the dev server to enable the Blackboard -> QM bridge. Nursing and Pharmacy are interested in using QM in Spring 06. Dental may be interested as well but issues prevent an easy deployment there. CITS will give schools an estimate of yearly costs if we do decide to use QM.
Banner 7 is coming in February '06, with some possible integration with SIMS.
Maryland Blackboard Day
UMBC is interested in starting a Maryland Blackboard Users' Group, and has started one at communities.blackboard.com. Nursing will be meeting with John Fritz there in early November, so feel free to send him items to discuss.
Dental's Oral Hygiene School is doing a demo with Sonic Foundry right now of their lecture capture system. Initial feedback from faculty has been positive, though it is hard to distinguish positive attitudes towards the concept of lecture capture from positive attitudes towards a particular system. One problem that has come up is that because of the way microphones are set up, professors must repeat student questions. This gets annoying and can bog down class if there are many questions.
Dental also has a designated note taker for each class, and then posts them online for students to view. Medicine also does this.
Buzz demoed a movie recorded in Camtasia that introduced the online e-Learning system to new users.
Next meeting: November 10, Dental School
