BLACKBOARD 6 MIGRATION UPDATE

Organizations – Due to UMB’s decision to drop the Portal feature in Blackboard version 6, all current Organizations have been converted to Courses.  This conversion will only affect School or University Organizations, such as HSHSL training courses, and not regular school-based courses.

Timeline - Discussion centered on possible timelines for migrating from BlackBoard version 5.5 to version 6.1 on both UMB’s traditional and CE environments.  Although, everyone agreed that there is no good time for the conversion due to year-round use of BlackBoard, the group consensus was that the conversion could not begin until after July 23, 2004.  Fall courses begin on Monday, August 30, 2004 for most schools.

Many factors will influence the actual conversion date and times including the receipt of the SUN hardware on order, staff schedules, courses being offered by the schools, and using the BlackBoard migration tool for the first time. Given these factors, the following downtimes are anticipated:

Traditional Campus BlackBoard Server (http://blackboard.umaryland.edu )
Blackboard version 6.1 Migration - beginning 5:00 pm on Friday, August 6, 2004. It is unknown how long this conversion will take, but please expect downtown at least through 8:00am on Monday, August 9, 2004

Continuing Education BlackBoard Server (http://ce.umaryland.edu )
Operating System Conversion - Windows to UNIX during the weekend of June 19, 2004
Blackboard version 6.1 Migration – during the weekend of July 10, 2004

GENERAL BLACKBOARD Q & A:

Will students still be able to self-enroll” themselves without the Portal version of Blackboard?
Yes, students will be able to “self-enroll” themselves when Blackboard Version 6 has been implemented and the enrollment option has been set in the course’s control panel.

Will instructors be able to access BlackBoard version 5.5?
Yes, there will be separate URLs for each version, but not indefinitely.  For example:
New CE Server – http://ce.umaryland.edu
Old CE Server - http://ce2.umaryland.edu

What is the preferred format for submitting a request for batch-loading students into a course?
To batch enroll users into Blackboard, please create and save an EXCEL (.xls), TEXT (.txt) or COMMA DELIMITED (.csv) file containing the students and their Login IDs (ie. UMnet User ID). Once created, send the file to help@umaryland.edu. The ASC Help Desk will add the users in the file to the Blackboard course(s).

What default features should be set for BlackBoard version 6.1?
This will be discussed in more detail at the next eLearning Steering Committee Meeting on Thursday, July 15, 2004.  For example, is the Books button available in BlackBoard version 6.1?  If not, what will happen during the migration?

Should we notify students about dropping the Portal version of Blackboard?
This can be done at the school level.  Dropping the portal feature should be transparent to most, if not all users.
