Workaround: Blank Worksheet Opens on PeopleSoft to Excel Downloads

July 25, 2016   |  By Financial Systems

On July 12, 2016 Microsoft released a security patch which made a change that interferes with downloads from PeopleSoft applications to Excel 2010 and 2013 (and 2016).  The patch prevents Excel worksheets from opening when certain file types come in from another computer.  After this patch is applied to a PC, downloading from PeopleSoft to Excel requires different steps.  This message includes recommended workarounds until Oracle or Microsoft respond with another solution.

Symptom

As the patch is rolled out to computers across the campus, you may observe the following problem:

When you download a file from PeopleSoft, Excel opens a blank worksheet with no gridlines.  Almost all options are greyed out.  Neither the Open nor the Save options work.  You can’t get at your downloaded data from Excel.

If you have not observed this symptom yet, continue downloading as you normally do.  The workarounds are only necessary after the patch has been applied to your PC.
