Use of Online Applications Increasing at UMB
The Student Information Management System—SIMS—has been providing UMB schools with direct access to student data since the summer of 2001. Later, a student web interface (the Student User Friendly System, or SURFS) was added. The School of Nursing piloted a web-based admissions process in 2004, with the Graduate School, Social Work and Physical Therapy following soon afteward. Recently, we have had some new additions to this growing trend:
School of Nursing Certificate Programs
In addition to using web admissions for their Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programs, the UMB School of Nursing (SON) has now added a web-based admissions process for their Certificates in Evidence Based Practice, Global Health, Environmental Health, Oncology Nursing, and Teaching in Nursing and Health Professions.
Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health Program (MPH), a professional degree program that is administratively based in UMB’s School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, is now accepting student applications online. This new process means that students are no longer required to download an application, fill it out, and mail it to the school for review and data entry into SIMS. Students are no longer required to mail in their essays; they can now simply Copy and Paste them into their online applications.
The Dental Hygiene Department within the UMB Dental School will also be going live with Web admissions procedures very soon.
CITS personnel continue to meet with school personnel to evaluate their business practices and reporting needs in order to help them make use of SIMS and SURFS as efficiently and effectively as possible.
