Using Technology to Reduce Manual Input in SIMS/SURFS

An increasing number of institutions nationwide are loading the applicant information needed for students to be admitted, register and receive financial aid using information transmitted electronically from national application services.  Included are these schools and departments at UMB:

Medical School - American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS)

Physical Therapy--Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS)

Pharmacy School - American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)

Law School - Law School Admission Council (LSAC)

Dental School-- Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS)

By loading records directly into Banner (via the baseline load processes) from files created within the application services software, UMB schools are greatly reducing the amount of manual input necessary from both students and administrative staff.

In another technological step forward, the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (DEPM) in the School of Medicine is now using the (automated) Banner Communication Plan and Letter Generation for Admissions letters.

As reported in a previous issue of CITS Bits, SURFS has been accessible through the use of the common myUMB ID for login access for some months now, and we are pleased to report that student feedback has been very positive.

SIMS users please note:  At this point all the SIMS User Guides have been updated, and current versions can be found at:  http://www.umaryland.edu/sims/guides.html.
