Internet Access From $6.95 a Month!
For performance, economic, and network security reasons, a decision was made to eliminate the campus modem pool by the end of the Fall 2003 semester. (The previously announced November 30 date has been extended.)

The plan is to offer as an alternative a single vendor solution for various levels of Internet service at the best possible prices. But until a single vendor is identified who meets all of the UMB community's expressed needs, a variety of specially discounted service packages from qualifying providers are offered, from which students, faculty and staff may wish to choose.

To see the results of the CITS analysis, students should log on to the secure part of the SURFS web page at http://simsweb.umaryland.edu/ and click on "Internet Service Providers." Faculty and staff may access the same information from a link on the CITS Web Page at http://www.umaryland.edu/cits.

UMB eLearning Technology Fair

Higher and professional education provides the fundamental training needed to prepare those who will steer the new information economy; information technology (IT) is the engine. IT at the University must be an effective support service to internal research, educational and administrative activities. It is, also, fundamentally changing the definition of those activities and extending their scope to local, regional, national and even global arenas.

Dr. MurrayDuring this past year, many major advances were made with technology for the purpose of enhancing operations and services here at UMB. The initiatives undertaken were important pieces of a larger integrated technology plan, but they could not have been completed without the cooperation of a dedicated and talented group of individuals who worked closely and well together. The collaborative work of IT staff, including those in CITS--the central information technology organization for the University--and those in the schools and departments, was the primary reason why so many technology initiatives have been successfully completed in such a relatively short time.

Examples of completed initiatives which have enhanced operations and services at the University include:

  • eUMB - eUMB is a multi-year project to replace UMB's core administrative applications for HR, payroll, finance, procurement and grants management with integrated software from PeopleSoft. The Human Resources and Payroll system was successfully implemented this past year.
  • SIMS/SURFS - SIMS, the Student Information Management System, was enhanced with the addition of SURFS, the Student UseR Friendly System that provides students with self-service Web registration as well as online access to personal financial and academic information. Through the use of "NetPay" students can now make their tuition payments online via the Web as well.
