UMB Security Strategy
July 10, 2002

Goal: To have a robust, secure campus networked environment that protects against security breaches while supporting appropriate access to data for UMB research, teaching, and administrative operations.

Objectives:

  • To implement and maintain for the campus: a central firewall, central intrusion detection system and other appropriate network security measures.
  • To provide a proactive means in which campus resources (servers and desktops) can be kept current with the latest security updates.
  • To develop an awareness of the need for security throughout the entire UMB community.

Current State: UMB does not have a central firewall or any current means of monitoring or restricting outside attacks via the internet. No formal procedures are in place to monitor the latest security measures that are available to us to protect our campus resources. Security patches and upgrades to operating systems are done inconsistently across the campus.

Schedule:

April - May:

  • Procured and installing Cisco Pix 535 Firewall(s).
  • Procured and installing central IDS.
  • Assembled and sharing data on campus resources (server, OS, contact. etc.).
  • Established communication lists for contacting campus IT administrators.

June - July:

  • Monitor network traffic to establish baselines.
  • Communicate network traffic findings to users.
  • Maintain ongoing communications with campus IT administrators.

 August:

  • Investigate and apply additional security measures.
  • Implement security policies and procedures.

Outcome: UMB will gain knowledge of potential security issues and have a means of protecting data from intrusion. Collaboration and communication with campus IT administrators will result in common solutions for protecting data, while at the same time, ensuring data access for those who need it. Security awareness will be heightened and more widespread throughout the University. UMB faculty, students and staff will work in a networked environment that is monitored and protected by appropriate tools and by a skilled and knowledgeable staff.
