University of Maryland, is a member of Internet2
The University of Maryland joined the more than 200 universities that participate in Internet2 on July, 1, 2002. Internet2 is a consortium of universities working in partnership with government and industry to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies. Internet2 continues the partnership that was created by academia, government and industry more than 20 years ago when the internet was first established. This next generation of internet has the following primary goals:
- Create a leading edge network capability for the national research community
- Enable revolutionary Internet applications
- Ensure the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broader Internet community
