UMB School of Medicine Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

     The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has experienced a great expansion within the past twenty years, including medical and graduate teaching, breath of research endeavor, and contribution to the scientific literature.  Scientific research involves protein structure and function, molecular genetics, and spectroscopy.  External grant awards have increased more than ten fold.  The NIH Awards Ranking for 2004, lists the Department 19th for all U.S. Medical Schools and 7th for State supported Medical Schools.  Departmental initiative of extended scope and services to the academic community include a National Fluorescence Center, a High Resolution Nuclear magnetic Resonance Facility, a Crystallography Facility, a Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility, an NIH supported Training Program, a Program Project, and the direction of the MD/PhD program.
