Blackboard Learn App Help

The DUO 2FA Push Notification method resolved in iOS 12. Some configurations appear to work on Android and older iOS devices, but there is a known issue with iOS 11. To authenticate in the apps via a mechanism which has implemented DUO 2FA security, use the Passcode method.

To use the Passcode Method:

  1. Bring up the mobile app on you mobile device.
  2. Click on the red button to go to the University of Maryland Web Login page and enter your UMID and Password - select Login.
  3. When the DUO page displays toggle to the DUO app to get a Passcode.
  4. Toggle back to the Web Login DUO page and select Enter a Passcode.
  5. Enter the Passcode then select Login.

The display on your device will flash back to the University of Maryland, Baltimore Web Login page briefly before taking you into the App.  The length of time will be determined on the speed of your internet connection.

Don't forget to logout of your mobile app!

  1. Open the options menu at the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. From the Settings page select Logout.

Photo Avatar in your Blackboard Courses

Your One Card photo is automatically transferred to the campus Blackboard system and displayed.

Online-only students may submit a photo for Blackboard. You will fill out the same form as on-site students.  Please add that you are an online-only student in the comment section. Online students will not get a printed One Card, but the photo will be transferred to the Blackboard system. Please visit the online form for instructions on the photo size and format you can upload.

Getting Started

  • How to get a Blackboard account:
    • If you have an active UMB Directory Account, you also should have a Blackboard account already created for you.
      • Employees and Affiliates
        • For new employees and affiliates, it may take some time between when you arrive on campus and when your UMB Directory Account is fully activated.
      • Students
        • For students, once you register for classes, the system will create your Blackboard account.
        • Please note that most Blackboard courses are not accessible by students until after the first day of the semester or term. If you are looking for the course before the first day of class, it may not be available to students yet. If it is after the first day of classes, check to see if your instructor is using Blackboard. Not all courses have a Blackboard component. If your instructor is using Blackboard and other individuals in the class can see the course, check with the instructor to see if you have been added as a student to the Blackboard Course.
        • Employees, students, affiliates, and community system members can use the Online Campus Directory to check on the status of their UMB account. (Click here to open the directory in a different window). Search for your name in the Campus Directory. Remember to search by the name that would be listed on your employee, student, affiliate, or community system record.
  • What is the Blackboard Login Page?
You will need a UMID account to access Blackboard from the Blackboard login page. Click on the red button to access the authentication page, where you will enter your UMID username and password.
  • What browsers can I use?

Accessing Courses

  • Unable to find a registered course
    • Please note that most Blackboard courses are not accessible by students until after the first day of the semester or term. If you are looking for the course before the first day of class, it may not be available to students yet.

If it is after the first day of classes, check to see if your instructor is using Blackboard. Not all courses have a Blackboard component. If your instructor is using Blackboard and other individuals in the class can see the course, check with the instructor to see if you have been added as a student to the Blackboard Course.
  • Course menu is missing
    • The instructor may have hidden the course menu. Contact your instructor to see if the course menu should be available in the course.

Communication

  • Email
  • Discussion Board
Trouble seeing new Discussion Board postings?
    • Check to see if you accidentally saved your contribution as a draft. Return to the forum page, access the Display menu, and select Drafts Only.
Select Search at the top of the main discussion board, forum, or thread page and search for a term you used in your message.
    • Refresh your browser.

Resources

  • Getting UMB Barcode without ID card
  • Using online library resources
    • Occasionally students may encounter authentication problems when trying to access online library resources through links in Blackboard. After clicking on the link in Blackboard, students are asked to log in, but the system will not accept their barcode number and last name.

To access online library resources, open a new web page and go directly to the Health Sciences and Human Services Library website. Links for E-Reserve, Journals, or Databases are listed under the “Resources” section. Click on the link for the resource you are trying to access. When you try to access a protected resource, you will be asked to authenticate with your barcode and last name.

For more information about accessing library resources, please go to HS/HSL website.

Not all schools/programs at UMB utilize Blackboard at this time. Please contact your local school/program Instructional Technology or Help Desk staff for usage-specific guidance.
