Pre Virus Preparation To Do’s
Make sure your Virus Software and Patterns are up to date.
o If you do not know your software is up to date, go to Start, Programs and look for Symantec/Norton or McAfee. If you do not see this software on your computer, go to the HS/HSL circulation desk and purchase Norton/Symantec software.
o If you do have the software and are not sure if the software if up to date. Go to either Program files or look for the icons usually in the right corner and click on the program. It usually looks like a Red or Yellow Shield.
o You should be looking for a pattern date, if the dates are more than a week old, update the patterns.
o To update the patterns for Norton or McAfee click on a button that states to update your patterns. The button usually states LiveUpdate. After update is completed look at the date and make sure your virus patterns are current. If you have updated software and the LiveUpdate feature is not working most likely you have a virus. Go to the “If you have a Virus sections”.
The next step is to make sure you Windows updates are current. If you are unclear if you are current on the updates, go to start, settings, control panel and click on automatic updates. This should take you to http://www.micirosoft.com/updates Another method to get to the updates is to click on this link above and follow the directions for updating the windows updates. Make sure you have the updates installed.
Next download AD-AWARE (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-2) and SPYBOT (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2). Make sure you save this software to your desktop.
Once you have downloaded this software and saved this to your desktop, double click on the aawsepersonal.exe and spybotsd13.exe files. Follow the directions to install.
It is not enough to install Norton, Microsoft Updates, AD-AWARE and SPYBOT once. You need to make sure at the very least twice a week the patterns of these programs are up to date and you scan your computer with these programs. The software is useless if the programs are not updated.
Lastly to make sure you are free and clear of the viruses, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and download the free scan from their website. Make sure you allow for the download by accepting this program into your computer. Once you have done this, make sure you check autoclean and check the C Drive. If you have more than one drive on your hard drive, make sure you scan this as well.
If you get a virus or if you are living in on-campus housing and you are no longer able to access the network –WHAT DO YOU DO?
First, don’t panic!!! This problem is fixable. Check the Pre-Virus To Do’s and check to see what is not up-to-date.
If you are turned off the network or you receive a scan from the virus check you have a virus, make sure you are physically unplugged to the network.
If you do have virus software and your patterns are not up-to-date, you can do two things, get your friend to download the intelligent updater for Norton or the McAfee scanner on a cd and download this on your pc and run the file or call the ASC-Helpdesk – 410-706-4357.
The more information you have on the issue, the faster we resolve your issue. Once you download this software, run a scan on your computer with your virus software. Basically what you are doing is updating your virus patterns without being on the network.
Next ask your same friend to download SPYBOT and AD-AWARE on a cd, it can be on the same CD as the Norton or McAfee patterns. Follow the directions up above in the pre-virus preparation instructions. Also, download a scan.
Lastly, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and have your friend download the scanclean (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp) and patterns (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp) to the same cd. Make sure you install all updated patterns. Click here for directions on how to scan for updated virus using scanclean and patterns for trendmicro. http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt
