Mission

The Department of Recreation & Wellness Services is committed to enriching the academic experience as well as encouraging the physical, mindful, cultural, spiritual, emotional, and social development of the University community.

Our goal is to promote a holistic development of the university community through programs and services that support the overall well-being of each individual.  We strive to provide quality programs, services, facilities and equipment to promote a lifelong development, appreciation, & awareness of recreational activity.

As stewards of the recreational resources we will constantly attempt, whenever possible, to expand current facilities, act as a resource, and to accommodate the recreational needs of the majority of the University community.  Participants are encouraged to explore their limits, expand new horizons, and pursue healthy, active lifestyle choices.

For those seeking personal assistance there arelimited opportunities existing for one-on-one personal training.  The center offers mini-screenings, fitness walking programs, educational wellness classes, and fitness assessments through the Wellness Room.

All currently enrolled UMB Students have free membership to the UMB University Athletic Center.  UMB staff & faculty, UMMS staff, alumni, spouses, dependents, and University Affiliates require membership to access the department's main recreational facility - University Athletic Center.  Programs held outside the facility may or may not require membership.  Classes and programs that have an associated fee are discounted for UMB Students and individuals with current UAC membership.  Membership Info....

Checking In (ID policy)

The UAC's security system is designed to help protect our student funded facility from theft and vandalism and to ensure all users have proper authorization.  Upon arriving at the UAC you must show your current UMB student ID or current UAC membership card.  Your ID will be scanned in order to verify your identification and to register your attendance for the facility for that given day and time.  UMB student IDs and UAC membership cards that are used by individuals other than the owner will be confiscated and refused entry into the facility.  The student or member whose card was confiscated must meet with the Director of the UAC to determine his/her future UAC eligibility.

Security and Safety

Please help us maintain a safe and secure environment by showing your student ID or UAC membership card upon arrival, by locking your possessions in a locker, by keeping your locker key with you at all times and notifying the staff if you see something "unusual" or unsafe.  Bicycles, in-line skates and skateboards are not allowed in the facility.  Gym bags, back packs, coats and other personal belongings not stored in a locker should be placed in or on the shelving (cubbies) provided throughout the UAC.  Proper workout attire must be worn throughout the facility, with the exception of the locker rooms.

History

In 1976, the Athletic Center (now University Athletic Center) opened for business on top of the Pratt Street Garage.  In its 31 years the department and facility has gone through many changes.  Though still using the name University Athletic Center, the department officially became the department of Recreation & Wellness Services in 2007 as the process towards opening the new recreational sports complex.  On June 25, 2008 the Athletic Center will officially close its doors for business as we make way for the Campus Center which includes a new recreational sports complex.  The initial planning and concept for the new facility started almost 10 years ago when the University formed the new Campus Center Planning Committee.   In July 2008, the University will open the BioPark Fitness & Conditioning Center.  The BioPark facility will serve the campus community while the Campus Center finishes completion (construction cam).  When the Campus Center opens in June 2009, the BioPark Fitness & Conditioning Center will continue to operate and service the campus & BioPark.

Closing of the University Athletic Center

The University Athletic Center will officially shut down for business on June 25, 2008.  This is part of the new construction and renovation for the new Campus Center scheduled to open in 2009 (late May - early June).  From July 2008 until the Campus Center opens in 2009, the University Community will have access to the new BioPark Fitness & Conditioning Center.   Though the facility has served the campus community well, the staff looks forward to services and amenities the Campus Center will provide.
